I'm a procurement manager at a 230-person flexible packaging company. I've managed our coding equipment budget for six years, and in that time I've tracked roughly $180,000 in cumulative spend. I'm not a branding person and I don't get paid to write reviews. I built a TCO spreadsheet after getting burned on hidden fees twice, and I use it for every major purchase.
The question I hear most from other buyers is simple: 'Is the Videojet 1520 printer worth it for flexible film printing?' Here's the thing: that question is incomplete. The real question is, 'Compared to what?'
So that's what this Videojet flexible film printing review does. It compares the Videojet 1520 using original Videojet supplies against the lower-priced alternative path that usually gets quoted to finance people like me: a lesser-known CIJ printer, aftermarket consumables, and a service plan that is not exactly transparent about the extras.
Why I'm comparing the whole system, not just the sticker price
For any coding line, the cost of owning a printer includes four buckets: purchase price, consumables, maintenance, and downtime. Most vendors quote the first two. The last two are where hidden fees live.
To keep this practical, I compared two setups on flexible film lines in our plant:
- Setup A: Videojet 1520 printer with Videojet ink, cleaner, and scheduled service.
- Setup B: a lesser-known continuous inkjet printer, aftermarket consumables, and a maintenance contract that looked cheap.
I also looked at fiber lasers and laser cutting machines, because a surprising number of flexible film jobs end up running on the wrong technology.
Dimension 1: print quality and adhesion on flexible film
Everything I'd read about consumables said 'there's no real difference once the cartridge clicks in.' My experience says otherwise. In a 2024 trial, we ran Videojet original ink and two aftermarket alternatives on the same Videojet 1520 printer. One aftermarket alternative passed every test and saved us money. The other looked good at first but smeared after 72 hours in a warm room. The Videojet original passed too.
Why did this happen? I don't own the chemical formulas. But I do own the test logs. The code on a flexible film package gets rubbed, wrapped, and shipped in trucks that can hit 50 degrees Celsius. The ink you choose matters. When we switched from the unvalidated aftermarket ink back to Videojet ink, the rejection rate on our packaging line dropped by 1.8 percent.
Put another way: the Videojet 1520 printer is only as good as the fluid in its ink cartridge. If you use an unvalidated consumable, you become the quality control department. That doesn't mean all aftermarket options are bad. It means you have to test them on your own line, not just in a sample case.
Dimension 2: TCO and the fees that hide in a cheap quote
Setup B's quote looked 14 percent cheaper than Setup A over a three-year contract. I almost signed it. Then I used my cost calculator.
When I added the items that were not on the quote, the picture flipped. Setup B had a setup fee, a waste-disposal surcharge, a first-year service call that was listed only as 'optional,' and a higher job-rejection rate from the unvalidated consumable. That brought Setup B's total to about $2,100 more than Setup A. The '14 percent saving' was gone.
Dodged a bullet on the 'free installation' quote, by the way. The install was free; the 50-foot conveyor interface was not. That line item cost $450 and almost cost us a week of setup time.
That's the hidden cost problem I keep coming back to. I've learned to ask 'what's NOT included' before I ask 'what's the price.'
Where fiber laser maintenance changes the comparison
If you're buying a Videojet 1520 for flexible film, you're comparing ink costs with downtime. If your product is jewelry, you should be looking at a fiber laser. Fiber laser maintenance is a different budget line: cleaning the lenses, checking the cooling system, replacing the protective window, and occasionally realigning the beam. Those jobs are less frequent than inkjet service, but they require someone with training.
In fiber laser jewelry engraving, a cheap laser can still produce beautiful marks. The maintenance cost is what makes or breaks it. Two jewelry customers I know spent more on service than they did on the laser, mainly because they skipped the scheduled cleaning. That's not an argument against fiber lasers; it's an argument for budgeting the upkeep.
What about China acrylic laser cutting machine manufacturers?
I get asked about this often because a Chinese acrylic laser cutting machine quote can be one-third of a Western brand's price. I evaluated three Chinese manufacturers for a display-packaging side project in 2024. The machine price was attractive. The total cost once I added freight, import fees, spare parts, and the risk of a week without support was not.
Some of those machines are excellent for the right buyer. The right buyer is someone with on-site engineering talent and a tolerance for long lead times. For a production line that can't stop, that's a no.
Dimension 3: transparency is the feature nobody quotes
When I audited our 2023 spending, I found that 12 percent of our 'budget overruns' came from fees that were either not in the original quote or buried in the service contract. Since then, my procurement policy requires quotes to list every line item, including what is NOT included.
The vendor who lists all fees upfront, even if the total looks higher, usually costs less in the end.
The Videojet 1520 quote from our rep was not the cheapest. But it had a separate line for scheduled maintenance, a list of excluded parts, and a clear response-time commitment. The cheaper vendor's quote had a lower number and no exclusions. When I asked, 'What's not included?' they said, 'Not much.' That vague answer cost them the order.
According to Videojet's official product page at videojet.com, the 1520 is a continuous inkjet printer built for demanding production environments. That matches what I've seen on our floor. The hardware is only part of the story, though. The service network and the fluids are what make it reliable.
So which should you choose?
If you run flexible film at speed and you can't afford skips, I'd choose the Videojet 1520 with original Videojet supplies. I don't say that because it's the most advanced or the cheapest. I say it because for our use case, it had the lowest cost per good printed code.
If you're marking jewelry, a fiber laser is worth the comparison. Just budget for fiber laser maintenance and verify your service support before you buy.
If your project is acrylic cutting, look at China acrylic laser cutting machine manufacturers. But compare the landed system cost, maintenance availability, and downtime risk, not just the sticker.
At least, that's been my experience with my production lines. Your line speed, film type, and staff will be different. So use my framework, not my answer.
There's something satisfying about a P&L where the coding line doesn't surprise me. After six years, I still check the fine print.
