Why I Recommend Videojet (With Caveats): A $30K Lesson in Equipment Fit

A production engineer shares why original Videojet cleaning solution V901-Q, consistent Videojet printer troubleshooting, and honest laser fit checks matter more than specs.

I believe most coding and marking equipment failures are self-inflicted. Not because the machine is bad, but because we buy specs and forget about supplies, support, and fit.

I'm an engineer who has handled coding and marking procurement since 2017. I've personally made and documented five significant mistakes, plus one near-miss that only cost me sleep. Roughly $30,000 in wasted budget, give or take $2,000. I now maintain our team's checklist so the next engineer doesn't repeat my errors.

Why the right cleaning solution matters more than the machine's price tag

In my first year (2017), I made the classic generic equivalent mistake. I looked at Videojet cleaning solution V901-Q, saw the price, and thought: it's just solvent, why pay the premium? So I bought a generic cleaning solution that looked the same color and smelled like the same solvent.

Three weeks later, our Videojet 1510 started acting up. Print quality drifted, then got ugly. A customer rejected 2,000 cartons because the best-before codes were unreadable. The frustrating part: the manual that came with the 1510 says to use Videojet cleaning solution V901-Q. I read that as marketing. What I didn't understand is that the cleaning solution isn't just a solvent; it's formulated to be compatible with the ink, the make-up fluid, and the printhead materials. A generic cleaner can leave residues that change how the next ink drop behaves. It can also damage seals. The spec sheet won't show you that.

To be fair, generic fluids work in some machines. But in a CIJ printer, the cleaner is part of a closed chemical system. 'Looks compatible' is not a valid test.

Videojet printer troubleshooting is a sequence, not a feeling

Fast-forward to September 2022. Another Videojet printer, different issue. Codes were getting lighter and lighter, like the printhead was slowly dying. I was sure it was the printhead. I had already told my manager we needed a new printhead assembly.

Before ordering, I opened the Videojet printer troubleshooting section and started at the beginning: pressure, then viscosity, then printhead alignment. I was impatient. The numbers said pressure was fine. My gut said it was the printhead. Then I noticed a tiny leak in the fluid line that was introducing air. That was causing the light codes. Then I read the request more carefully. They wanted to cut thin stainless steel tags, not mark them. Cutting, not coding. That is a completely different machine. An open type CNC fiber laser cutting machine would have been the right category, not a laser marker. A fiber laser marker can etch or anneal a surface; it cannot cut through sheet metal. The power, optics, and safety enclosure are designed for different jobs.

The phrase eye-safe fiber laser makes this confusion worse. People assume it means you can stare at the laser beam. It doesn't. Per IEC 60825-1:2014, many industrial fiber laser markers achieve Class 1 only when the protective housing and interlocks are in place. Open the enclosure, and the safety classification changes. Eye-safe is a property of the system, not the laser source. If someone tells you a fiber laser is eye-safe without qualifying that, ask about the beam path and interlocks. Verify current requirements with your local notified body before assuming Class 1 means zero risk.

This is also where I have to be honest about Videojet. Videojet makes solid laser markers. I have not seen an open type CNC fiber laser cutting machine in their coding and marking portfolio. If your application is sheet-metal cutting, go to a different supplier. That's not a flaw; it's fit.

The CO2 laser Turkey comparison that made me check my assumptions

In June 2024, I was helping a friend compare suppliers for a CO2 laser coding application. He found a Turkish manufacturer through a search for CO2 laser Turkey, and the quote came in almost 30% lower than German and UK suppliers. The numbers made sense. My gut said the support distance would be painful.

I went back and forth for three weeks. The Turkish equipment itself wasn't the problem.   • Define the actual task: marking, cleaning, or cutting? Marking and cutting are not interchangeable.
  • Verify consumables chemistry with the OEM before substituting anything.
  • Read the troubleshooting guide in order. Don't trust what worked last time.
  • Calculate total cost of ownership, not list price. Include freight, duty, support, and downtime.
  • Ask: what happens when it breaks? The answer is part of the product.

I've caught 47 potential mistakes with this list in the 18 months since I built it. 47 is the exact count in the log. Probably a few more never made it into the log.

What about the 'just buy original supplies' objection?

The standard objection goes like this: Videojet original consumables cost more. Aftermarket products are cheaper. You're just a brand loyalist.

I get it. I used to say the same thing. But after the cleaning solution incident, I changed my calculation. The question isn't how much the bottle costs. It's how much it costs if the wrong bottle shuts down the line. When you include outages, rejected products, and service calls, the original cleaner is the cheap option for machines that require matched chemistry. If your printer is completely out of warranty and you have a trusted local chemist, maybe you can take a different risk. That is your call.

But no, I don't think buy original is always right. For things like wipes and simple filters, price comparison makes sense. For anything that touches the ink, printhead, or laser optics, I stick with the manufacturer's recommendation. That is an honest limitation, not a blanket rule.

My opinion, unchanged

The biggest equipment-buying mistakes are self-inflicted. We choose by spec sheet, then skip the chemistry, the troubleshooting sequence, and the safety engineering. Then we wonder where the budget went. I still recommend Videojet for most coding and marking applications, if the fit is right. Fit includes consumables, troubleshooting, and service. If you need a cutting machine, or a laser system without local support, I'll tell you up front: look elsewhere. That's not indecision. It's the whole point.
