Videojet Continuous Inkjet (CIJ) Printers

These are the workhorses. Think the Videojet 1510 or 1580. They're versatile, fast, and handle most substrates. But they need regular cleaning solution and maintenance. If your line stops for a week, the printhead might clog. We had that happen once. Cost us a shift of downtime.

Videojet Fiber Laser Marking Systems

As of January 2025, I'd say the sweet spot for most medium-volume lines is a Videojet CIJ for general coding and a fiber laser for permanent marks on hard surfaces. That combo covers maybe 90% of what we ship.

Step 5: Check the Support & Parts Availability (Don't Learn This the Hard Way)

Like most beginners, I assumed all vendors had the same support. Nope. One of our previous suppliers (not Videojet) had a 3-week lead time on a printhead. Our line was down for $1,200/hour.

Videojet's global service network is a real advantage. For the 1580 model, I can get original parts and cleaning solutions shipped within 48 hours in most cases. That's not small talk—that's saved our bacon twice. Once when a pump failed, and once when we ran out of make-up fluid on a Friday night.

Point: Ask the rep for the average lead time on critical parts (nozzle, pump, printhead) and response time for service calls. Get it in writing.

Common Mistakes & Things I Wish I'd Known

  • Low-cost ink is not a bargain. I tried a 'compatible' ink once. Saved $400. Spent $2,000 cleaning the printhead and replacing filters. Stick with original Videojet cleaning solution and ink.
  • Fiber laser won't mark everything. It's great for metal and some plastics, but it won't work on clear glass or transparent film. For those, you need a different laser type (CO2) or a different technology entirely.
  • Don't assume your line speed. Measure it. I incorrectly estimated our line speed at 100 units/min. It was actually 180. The CIJ printer we bought couldn't keep up. We had to add a second printhead.
  • Training matters. The operator manuals are thick. Budget for half a day of on-site training. It pays for itself in reduced errors.
