From CO2 Laser Disaster to Videojet Laser Printer: A Fixable Failure

I pushed my company to buy a cheap CO2 laser from Bochum. It failed on our line, cost us $14k, and then a Videojet laser printer fixed everything. Here are the lessons I wish someone had told me.

The Day the Galvo Stopped

In April 2023, I was standing in front of a brand-new laser galvo CO2 marker that had just stopped mid-run. Not a planned stop. No error code. Just a loud hum, then silence. Behind me, the packaging line was still moving, and 400 unmarked cartons were heading to a customer who inspected every single batch.

That last one was the hardest for me to learn. I'd spent years treating our Videojet CIJ printers as “old tech.” In reality, they were efficient. They rarely failed. The only inefficiency was my assumption that newer meant better.
